Jaguar Land Rover diesel vehicles are fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)— a component in the exhaust system designed to trap soot and harmful particles before they are released into the air. Over time, the DPF fills up with soot and needs to be cleaned through a process known as regeneration. In most vehicles, this process occurs automatically, with the car’s system detecting the build-up and initiating a self-cleaning cycle.
However, many Jaguar Land Rover owners have reported that this regeneration process is not functioning properly. When the DPF is not effectively cleaned, soot can accumulate to dangerous levels, leading to serious engine performance issues. In some cases, vehicles may enter “limp mode”—significantly reducing speed and drivability—or shut down unexpectedly.
A further complication arises during attempted regeneration. The process requires additional fuel, which in some cases can seep into the engine oil. This dilutes the oil and reduces its ability to properly lubricate engine components, resulting in premature wear and potential engine damage.
The overall impact on affected owners can include poor fuel economy, more frequent and costly oil changes, repeated DPF repairs or replacements, and in severe cases, significant engine damage. These are costs that owners should not reasonably have been required to bear.
